Madeline Hunter Educator Introducing Learning Policy And Techniques


Education & ScienceMadeline Cheek Hunter popularly known as Madeline Hunter was born on 1916. She was a very popular educator. During the last quarter of the 20th century, many schools had accepted and followed the model introduced by her for learning and teaching. The Sierra Research Institute and the National Women's Hall of Fame had ranked her among the ten most influential people in education and she was also considered as the one of the hundred most influential lady of the 20th century. Unfortunately, she died in the year 1994. Madeline Hunter was the daughter of Alexander Cheek, grandson of a Cherokee Indian and Anna Keis who was the daughter of a Bohemian nobleman.

The family of Madeline Hunter originally belonged to Canada but later they shifted to California. Madeline did her schooling mostly in California. When she was in her junior high, she was asked to test few psychological theories of Stanford University on intelligence which made her interested in knowing more about human intelligence. She joined the University of California at Los Angeles at the age of 16 where she studied psychology major and pre-medicine along with her ballet dancing. Her first work experiences at Juvenile Hall and at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles created an impact on her and encouraged to choose a career in psychology.

Madeline Hunter got married to Robert Hunter, an engineer during the Second World War. While her first child named, Cheryl born in 1944 became a film editor, her second child named Robin born in 1946 became principal of the school afterwards. She began to work full time as an educator after her children grew up and became independent. In her career, she has worked for several posts like director of research, school psychologist, assistant superintendent, and principal. In a laboratory school setting, she was also given the authority to change her educational model.

Madeline Hunter considered teachers as the main decision makers of teaching. According to her, the decisions made by a teacher can be divided into three parts and they are Content category which comprises of what the teachers will teach, learning behavior category which explains what the students will be learning and teaching behavior category how the teachers will accelerate that learning. She believed that the future of education was good and the teaching process has become more of a profession combining both arts and science so that a productive and better world can be formed for humans.

The Practice teaching model was put into the Instructional Theory by Madeline Hunter. Through out the United States, this direct instruction program was adopted by several schools. The seven components of teaching pointed out by her, are content, classroom management, knowledge of human growth and development, planning, instructional skills, materials and human relations. She also identified seven direct instructional model and they are standards, objectives, teaching standards, anticipatory set, guided practice/monitoring, independent practice and closure. The effective instruction has almost same components as those of instructional model. Madeline Cheek Hunter
